How does Boundless Health help prevent Osteoporosis?

One of the major health problems facing older Australians is osteoporsosis. Do you want to know if you are at risk? Test yourself with a quick one-minute quiz.

  1. Has either of your parents broken a hip after a minor bump or fall?
  2. Have YOU broken a bone after a minor bump or fall?
  3. For women: Did you undergo menopause before the age of 45?
  4. For women: Have your periods stopped for 12 months or more (other than because of pregnancy)?
  5. For men: Have you ever suffered from impotence, lack of libido or other symptoms related to low testosterone levels?
  6. Have you lost more than 3cm (1 inch) in height?
  7. Do you regularly drink heavily (more than 4 drinks for men, more than 2 drinks for women per day)?
  8. Do you smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day?
  9. Have you taken corticosteroid tablets (cortisone, prednisone, etc) for more than 3 months?
  10. Do you suffer frequently from diarrhoea (caused by problems such as Coeliac disease or Crohn's disease)

If you answered "yes" to any of the above questions then you are at risk of suffering from osteoporosis. (Sourced from Osteoporosis Australia)

Osteoporosis is one of the most common diseases affecting older people today. In Australia:

  • One in two women and one in three men over the age of 60 are likely to suffer a fracture, (which is) due to osteoporosis (Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Sydney 1995).
  • The incidence of hip fracture exceeds that of cancer of the breast, cervix and uterus combined ((Royal Australian College of Physicians, Working Party on Osteoporosis, 1991).
  • 50% of elderly patients suffering hip fractures will require long term nursing care (Royal Australian College of Physicians, Working Party on Osteoporosis, 1991)

These may appear to be frightening statistics.
However there is GOOD NEWS.
We understand this disease and we can help you manage it.

Prevention is really the only effective treatment. Prevention includes hormone replacement, which is not without side effects as well as diet and exercise.

What type of exercise is right for you?

At Boundless Health we understand everyone is different. That is why we make and effort to get to know you up front. This helps us decide if our programs are appropriate and which one will meet your goals.

We also understand the obstacles facing over 50's and their health. That is why our programs target four key areas:

  • Strength
  • Flexibility
  • Balance
  • Posture

These four areas are crucial if you want to prevent being affected by osteoporosis. Often people only become aware of having osteoporosis after they have had a fall and a fracture due to the disease. By getting improvements in the 4 areas above you not only start to halt the progression of bone loss but you can also significantly reduce your risk of falls, thereby preventing yourself suffering painful and costly fractures.

Prevention is the recommended treatment. Just ask your Doctor.
