How does Boundless Health help with?

How can Boundless Health help you with Arthritis?

Arthritis broken down is made up of two words "arth" meaning joint and "itits" meaning swelling. It is a condition where the cartilage (joint surface) looses its smooth shiny appearance and becomes rough, causing pain and swelling.

Rheumatoid arthritis is caused by an error of the immune system and the body actively attacks the joint tissue. In these cases it is recommended that pain and inflammation is controlled with medication, and your Doctor's advice should be sought. If you are suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, exercise is recommended when your disease process is less active. Because our classes can be tailored to your needs we recommend you work within your own limits of pain. Over time these boundaries can be pushed back with the right type of exercise and often you'll find every day activities easier.

Osteoarthritis is often referred to as "wear and tear" arthritis as it is caused by excessive wearing of joint surfaces. This could be due to the wrong type of activity, poor joint mechanics or excessive weight. If you suffer from osteoarthritis you are not alone. It is estimated that around 68% of people in the US who are over 55 years of age have OA changes (Elders 2000).

A solution to managing the pain of osteoarthritis
There is a growing body of knowledge proving what we have known for some time at Boundless Health. The right exercise can be very effective if you suffer from OA, particularly of the knees and/or hips (Ettinger et al1997, Van Baar et al1998).

The specific exercises can increase your muscle strength, mobility and endurance.

Increasing your strength can provide the joint with increased support whilst walking or lifting and thus limit the wear and tear with everyday activities.

Improvements in your flexibility will also improve your joint mechanics, by decreasing uneven loads on the joint that can cause pain, wear and tear.

Improved mobility will lead to improved joint health, and by improving your endurance you will be able to do that much more before those joints ache, pretty soon you may be able to manage your pain altogether.
