How does Boundless Health help with Heart disease?

It is vital you know what you can do to prevent cardiovascular disease as it is the most prevalent disease group in older adults in the USA, UK, Canada and Australia (AIHW 2002, p228). There is plenty of evidence to show that if you do exercise regularly you can help prevent a heart attack happening. If you are starting late, it can still help you prevent a second one from occurring (Wannamethee et al 2000, Hakim et al1999 and Fried et al 1998).

Your heart, like any muscle, it needs periods of increased work to keep it at the top of its game. This causes your heart muscle to become stronger, enabling it to push more blood per beat. That's why really fit people have such slow heart rates. Ian Thorpe might be down as low as 40 beats per minute (bpm). Us mere mortals should be anywhere from 60 to 90bpm. Any higher and it may be worth getting checked out. Make sure you are nice and relaxed when you check. It is the resting heart rate we are talking about and remember some of your medications can affect your heart rate. Talk to your Dr if you are not sure.

For older adults, aerobic exercise can slow or prevent losses in aerobic fitness. A very active 70-year old adult will have a similar fitness (VO2max) scores to that of a sedentary adult aged 30-40 years (US Department of Health and Human Services 1996 pg 76). Who says you can't keep up with younger generation; if they don't watch out you might even beat them!

If you have had some sort of cardiovascular event then you know how important it is to start working on your fitness. At Boundless Health we teach you how to monitor how hard you are working so that you can exercise at a safe level. This is important during the class but probably more important at home, whether you are out working on the garden, swinging the golf club or playing with grand children. You need to know where your limits are and how to work within them safely.
